The American Chess Congress's experiment was not repeated, and Steinitz's last three matches were private arrangements between the players. The match was played in New York in 1890 and ended in a 10½–8½ victory for Steinitz. However, the third prize-winner Isidor Gunsberg was prepared to play for the title. The tournament was duly played, but the outcome was not quite as planned: Mikhail Chigorin and Max Weiss tied for first place their play-off resulted in four draws, and Weiss then wanted to get back to his work for the Rothschild Bank, conceding the title to Chigorin.

We are going to report on the Canadian event soon. The American Chess Congress's final proposal was that the winner of a tournament to be held in New York in 1889 should be regarded as world champion for the time being, but must be prepared to face a challenge from the second or third placed competitor within a month. However, this time Ivanchuk went to another tournament, a round-robin in Edmonton which overlapped with the Capablanca memorial. Among the invited well-known GMs, Vassily Ivanchuk has been the most frequent visitor, and it was he who won the tournament six times in the last ten years. The chess festival in memory of the great Jose Raoul Capablanca is an annual event in the third World Champion's homeland. All his games from the event can be replayed below. He is now 21th player in the world rankings with 2736, which is his best rank in career so far. Now he adds the Capablanca Memorial to his collection. He also won the Qatar Masters 2014, an extremely strong open held in November, where he beat Kramnik in the last round. He is the Olympic champion and the World Champion as a member of the Chinese national team. Yu Yangyi has become a frequent guest on our reports. He is also the only player who managed to defeat the triumpher. Dmitry Andreikin is the one to have the most serious chances for second place.

There is no Sofia rule in the tournament, so such short draws are possible even without a repetition, and the participants have benefited from that several times. Yu Yangyi of China made a quick draw in the penultimate round to secure himself the overall victory. In the main tournament of the 50th Capablanca Memorial in Havana, there was no serious fight for first place. He secured his first place with one round to spare
